Hyderabad Police have intensified their crackdown on Chinese manja before the Sankranti festival, confiscating contraband valued at Rs 43 lakh over the past four days. The police are actively targeting the banned synthetic/nylon kite string to prevent its sale, storage, and distribution in the city. Police Commissioner V.C. Sajjanar stated that a special operation is ongoing in Hyderabad, resulting in the seizure of 2,150 bobbins worth Rs 43 lakh from January 8 to January 11.
The authorities have filed 29 cases and detained 57 individuals involved in selling the banned Chinese manja. Commissioner Sajjanar emphasized that this prohibited material poses risks to the environment, birds, and human safety. In the preceding month, law enforcement recorded 132 cases, confiscated 8,376 bobbins valued at Rs 1.68 crore, and apprehended 200 suspects for similar offenses.
Sajjanar highlighted the severe consequences for those engaged in the purchase or sale of the banned manja, stressing the importance of using safe alternatives during the festive season. He cautioned against the use of Chinese manja, citing incidents where motorcyclists, including a constable and a student, suffered serious neck injuries due to the banned material. In a recent case, a 33-year-old man sustained a deep shoulder wound from Chinese manja while riding a bike in Gachibowli, necessitating medical treatment to close the wound.
