Union Minister for Environment, Forest and Climate Change Bhupender Yadav revealed the inclusion of two fresh wetlands in India’s Ramsar network. These wetlands, located in Uttar Pradesh and Gujarat, are the Patna Bird Sanctuary in Etah district and Chhari-Dhand in Kutch district. They offer a habitat for various migratory and resident bird species, along with wildlife like chinkara, wolves, caracals, desert cats, desert foxes, and endangered birds.
India, a signatory to the Ramsar Convention since 1982, is dedicated to conserving and wisely using wetlands through cooperation at local, national, and international levels. Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed joy over the recognition of these wetlands, emphasizing the importance of wetland conservation for preserving biodiversity and ecosystems. Minister Yadav highlighted the significant growth of India’s Ramsar network under PM Modi’s leadership, expanding by over 276% to 98 sites currently.
Wetlands of conservation value can be designated as Wetlands of International Importance, showcasing a nation’s commitment to conservation under globally accepted frameworks. The addition of these two wetlands reflects India’s strong dedication to environmental protection and wetland preservation. With World Wetlands Day approaching, the recognition of these sites underscores India’s pledge to safeguard its rich biodiversity and vital ecosystems.
