The ‘India AI Impact Summit 2026’, which took place in New Delhi last week, is being recognized by foreign media as a major artificial intelligence gathering in the Global South. It is considered the largest AI summit globally. The summit aimed to democratize AI and bridge the AI gap between the Global North and South, where AI resources are concentrated in a few wealthy nations and corporations.
The event highlighted the importance of AI for inclusive growth and sustainable development, emphasizing “AI for Humanity.” India’s vision focused on amplifying Global South voices and prioritizing local contexts over Western tech dominance. The summit showcased India’s progress as an emerging AI powerhouse, leveraging its tech talent and digital infrastructure to close the AI gap.
While the Global North leads in AI adoption, the Global South faces challenges like limited infrastructure and skills. Africa, despite its large and young population, struggles with digital infrastructure and skill gaps hindering AI adoption. India, on the other hand, with its tech talent and government initiatives like IndiaAI Mission, is actively advancing in AI technology.
The summit, inaugurated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, aimed to connect advanced economies with developing nations. It drew participation from over 100 countries, focusing on actionable AI impact. World leaders, tech executives, and policymakers attended the event to discuss AI’s impact on society and development.
