India strongly denounced the recent killing of three Indonesian peacekeepers in Lebanon, part of the United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL). The attacks were condemned by India’s United Nations Mission, emphasizing the need for accountability for such crimes. The United Nations expressed its disapproval of the incidents, highlighting the unacceptable nature of targeting peacekeepers.
Secretary-General Antonio Guterres also voiced condemnation for the killings, echoing the sentiments of the international community. UNIFIL, operating in a sensitive area bordering Israel, aims to support Lebanon in regaining control and maintain peace in the region. India, a significant contributor to UN peacekeeping missions, has been at the forefront of advocating for the safety and security of peacekeepers.
India’s commitment to peacekeeping was underscored by its role in piloting a Security Council resolution in 2021, calling for action against those who target peacekeepers. With a long history of involvement in peace operations, India has tragically lost personnel in the line of duty, including six with UNIFIL. The country continues to actively engage in UN missions, with a substantial number of Indian troops currently serving with UNIFIL.
The recent incidents, including the tragic deaths of peacekeepers and the attack on a UNIFIL convoy, have raised concerns about the safety and security of peacekeeping operations in the region. The need for a thorough investigation into the attacks and ensuring accountability for the perpetrators remains a top priority for India and the United Nations.
