The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) dismissed reports alleging India’s formal request for observer status in the “Islamabad Peace Process” as false. The MEA’s fact-checking unit warned against believing such misinformation and emphasized the importance of verified information. External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar refuted the claims, cautioning the public about the proliferation of false information, especially on critical foreign policy issues.
The ministry clarified that India had not made any such request and labeled the circulating reports as unfounded. The origin of the claim seems to be unverified social media posts suggesting India’s interest in joining a peace initiative associated with Islamabad. India’s stance on issues concerning Pakistan and regional peace processes remains consistent, emphasizing the need for credible actions against cross-border terrorism before engaging in peace talks.
The MEA’s swift response aims to avoid confusion or misinterpretation in diplomatic circles. India has a firm policy of refraining from participating in peace talks facilitated by Pakistan unless concrete steps are taken against terrorism and the dismantling of terror infrastructure. The MEA FactCheck unit actively combats false narratives, misinformation, and propaganda that distort India’s foreign policy positions.
Officials highlighted the risks posed by the dissemination of fake news, which not only misleads the public but also complicates diplomatic matters. The ministry advised both citizens and media outlets to rely solely on official government sources for accurate updates on foreign policy issues. The incident underscores the challenges posed by the rapid spread of misinformation on social media platforms.
The government continues to strengthen its fact-checking mechanisms to uphold transparency and safeguard India’s national interests. India’s commitment to regional peace and stability remains unwavering, contingent upon sincerity, anti-terrorism actions, and respect for its territorial integrity and security concerns. There has been no official endorsement from the Government of India regarding the claim of seeking observer status in any “Islamabad Peace Process.”
