The India Electronics and Semiconductor Association (IESA) praised the government and Micron Technology for inaugurating a cutting-edge ATMP facility in Sanand, Gujarat. Ashok Chandak, President of IESA, described the event as a significant milestone in India’s semiconductor industry, emphasizing the country’s emergence as a key player in advanced semiconductor design and manufacturing. Micron’s substantial investment of Rs 22,516 crore in the facility signifies a major commitment to India’s manufacturing sector.
The newly opened facility in Sanand will focus on manufacturing DRAM, NAND, and SSD products, crucial components that drive various technologies including AI systems, high-performance computing, smartphones, data centers, automotive electronics, and digital infrastructure. This move is strategically important as only a few countries globally have the capability for memory manufacturing. The association highlighted the timing of India’s foray into memory manufacturing, citing the increasing global demand, especially from AI workloads, and the ongoing supply challenges.
With the establishment of the memory plant and existing design centers of Micron, India’s semiconductor capabilities are set to expand significantly. The upcoming Chip OSAT facilities, along with Micron’s presence, are expected to strengthen India’s design-led manufacturing base and enhance export potential. The Sanand facility is projected to create around 5,000 direct jobs and over 15,000 indirect employment opportunities, contributing to the development of a skilled semiconductor workforce.
The commissioning of Micron’s ATMP plant in Sanand signifies the successful implementation of India’s semiconductor policy and readiness for manufacturing in the sector.
