India Looks Incredible from Space,” Says Astronaut Sunita Williams

Veteran NASA astronaut Sunita Williams, who recently completed a nine-month mission aboard the International Space Station (ISS), shared heartfelt reflections on viewing India from space. As she orbited Earth at a speed of over 28,000 kilometers per hour, one sight always left her in awe—India.
“Every time we went over the Himalayas, I would pause. They look like ripples where the tectonic plates collided—just amazing,” she said, describing how the immense mountain range gradually gave way to the vibrant geography of the Indian subcontinent.
A Nation That Glows at Night
One of the most mesmerizing moments, Williams noted, was seeing India lit up at night. From space, the country transforms into a shimmering network of city lights, like veins of gold across the dark landscape. Major urban centers sparkled with intensity, while smaller towns connected in a web of glowing trails.
She particularly recalled approaching India from the east, over Gujarat and Mumbai, where tiny fishing vessels off the coast served as glimmering markers in the sea—”like little beacons,” she fondly said.
Deep Cultural Connection
With Gujarati roots, Williams shares a strong emotional bond with India. During her mission, she often thought of her ancestral land and its growing role in space exploration.
Looking forward, she expressed genuine enthusiasm about India’s ambitions in space. “I hope to work with India’s space community in the future and support young astronauts,” she added. Her comments come as India prepares for its participation in the upcoming Axiom Mission 4, which will see an Indian astronaut head to space in collaboration with international partners.
Back on Earth: What She Missed Most
Returning to Earth is always a process. Williams shared how her body has been adjusting after months of zero gravity—something she prepared for by sticking to a strict fitness regime aboard the ISS.
Despite the scientific marvels and extraordinary views, her priorities upon landing were delightfully grounded: “I missed my husband and dogs the most,” she said with a smile.
As one of the most accomplished astronauts of our time, Sunita Williams continues to inspire not just through her achievements, but through the humility and wonder with which she sees our planet—especially the part of it she calls home.
