India is being recognized as a significant force in artificial intelligence (AI) globally, according to Kristalina Georgieva, Managing Director of the International Monetary Fund. She highlighted India’s progress in AI, attributing it to robust reforms, digital infrastructure, and a skilled tech workforce. The IMF MD praised India for its swift development of digital public infrastructure and abundant IT-skilled labor.
Georgieva commended India for its recent economic reforms, acknowledging the country’s advancements in this area. She also mentioned India’s promising prospects in AI, emphasizing the country’s remarkable potential. Responding to comments by Union Electronics and Information Technology minister Ashwini Vaishnaw, Georgieva expressed optimism about India’s AI capabilities.
Vaishnaw had defended India’s AI standing against Georgieva’s remarks, citing a Stanford assessment that ranked India third globally in AI preparedness. Georgieva highlighted the positive impact of AI on global growth, suggesting that dynamic economies like India could benefit even more. She praised India’s proactive approach to competitiveness and independent AI development.
Georgieva revealed her upcoming visit to India for an AI summit, expressing enthusiasm about the trip. She described India as a shining example amid global economic uncertainties. While acknowledging high expectations surrounding AI globally, she warned about potential setbacks if these expectations are not met. Georgieva emphasized the importance of strong economic fundamentals and commended India’s policy focus in this regard.
