In a gesture of solidarity, the Government of India has pledged crucial humanitarian aid to support Kenya in the aftermath of devastating floods that have wreaked havoc across the nation. Reports indicate that 38 out of Kenya’s 47 counties have been severely affected by the deluge, resulting in a staggering toll of 267 lives lost, 188 injured, and over 280,000 people displaced from their homes.
Responding swiftly to the crisis, a relief consignment is set to be airlifted today via an Indian Air Force plane, carrying a comprehensive array of 22 tons of humanitarian assistance and disaster relief items (HADR). These vital supplies include tents, sleeping bags, blankets, power generation sets, and ready-to-eat meals, alongside basic sanitary utilities and hygiene kits, aiming to provide immediate relief to the beleaguered populace of Kenya.
Moreover, the consignment encompasses approximately 18 tons of crucial medical aid, comprising essential life-saving drugs and surgical equipment crucial for critical care and wound management. Additionally, provisions for baby food, water purification, menstrual hygiene, and measures to combat mosquito-borne illnesses such as malaria and dengue are included, underlining India’s commitment to addressing the multifaceted challenges faced by the flood-affected communities.
Earlier this month, Indian Naval ship INS Sumedha arrived in Mombasa on May 10th, laden with immediate relief assistance, including one HADR pallet and two medical pallets, further bolstering India’s efforts to provide timely aid to Kenya.
The decision to extend support to Kenya underscores India’s enduring commitment to fostering strong and friendly relations with the African nation, in line with the principles of South-South cooperation. Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s emphasis on prioritizing Africa in India’s foreign policy agenda is reiterated through this humanitarian initiative.
