The Indian Air Force (IAF) is focusing on indigenization to boost its defense preparedness and military capabilities. The Sukhoi-30 MKI fighter jets, armed with BrahMos missiles, are part of the “Super Sukhoi” upgrade program to integrate indigenous technology and upgrades. This initiative, led by Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL) and DRDO, aims to reduce reliance on foreign sources and enhance the fighter fleet’s capabilities.
Under the “Super Sukhoi” program, plans are underway to upgrade 84 Sukhoi aircraft with indigenous avionics, radars, and engines. The project also includes indigenization of air-to-air and air-to-ground missile launchers, emphasizing the use of locally developed components. Efforts are being made to develop a “common launcher” system to enable versatile missile deployment without changing the launcher itself, enhancing operational efficiency.
Aligning with the ‘Atmanirbhar Bharat’ (Self-Reliant India) initiative, the IAF is not only focusing on indigenous launcher development but also on air-to-air and air-to-ground missile systems. The Sukhoi-30 fleet, a key asset in the IAF, plays a vital role in carrying the BrahMos missile and other munitions. With a significant number of Sukhoi-30 aircraft manufactured domestically, the IAF is working towards strengthening its fleet with cutting-edge technology.
