Indian American community leader Ashok Baddi has declared his candidacy for the Michigan House of Representatives, aiming to bring practical and people-centric leadership to a diverse suburban district near Detroit. Baddi, a resident of Troy for over a decade, emphasized his deep local connections and community involvement as the driving force behind his decision to run. He highlighted the district’s significant Indian population, constituting nearly a quarter of the residents and around 12,000 voters, underscoring the potential impact of this demographic in elections.
Baddi stressed the importance of political engagement in driving meaningful change, expressing his belief that active participation is crucial for effecting positive transformations. His decision to enter the political arena was influenced by his alignment with Republican values, particularly on issues related to gender and education, where he advocates for maintaining honors programs to cater to diverse learning capacities among students.
Education stands as a key pillar of Baddi’s campaign platform, with a focus on preserving educational opportunities tailored to individual student capabilities. A former resident of rural America, Baddi, who immigrated from Hyderabad in 2005, emphasized the significance of legal immigration pathways while advocating for a structured approach to entering the United States. He is set to challenge Democratic incumbent Sharon McDonald, citing concerns over community welfare and policy outcomes as key reasons for his candidacy.
Baddi acknowledged the financial challenges inherent in political campaigns, highlighting the importance of fundraising in sustaining electoral endeavors. He called for increased political contributions from the Indian American community to support his bid for the Michigan House of Representatives. Michigan, known for its substantial Indian American population, has witnessed a rise in civic engagement from the community, reflecting a broader trend of increased political involvement among Indian Americans nationwide.
