Indian-American Teen Nandana Menon Shines at SXSW 2024 with Award-Winning Autism Support App

Indian-American high school student Nandana Menon has won the prestigious SXSW Student Impact Challenge 2024, held in Austin, Texas, for her groundbreaking mobile application ‘AutBuddy’. Designed to support children on the autism spectrum, the app uses technology to enhance their communication skills, daily routines, and overall well-being.

The SXSW (South by Southwest) Student Impact Challenge recognizes young innovators who are creating meaningful social change through technology and entrepreneurship. Among hundreds of entries from across the country, Nandana’s project stood out for its empathy-driven design and practical utility in supporting neurodiverse children.

What is ‘AutBuddy’?
‘AutBuddy’ is an intuitive, user-friendly mobile application created with the goal of supporting children with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD). It offers features such as:

  • Routine-building tools to help children maintain consistency and structure in daily life
  • Visual communication aids that simplify interactions for non-verbal or semi-verbal children
  • Gamified learning modules designed to develop social and cognitive skills
  • Parent and caregiver integration to allow family members to stay involved and informed

Nandana was inspired to build the app after volunteering with children who experience autism. Her personal experience and genuine commitment to making a difference led to the creation of this inclusive tech solution.

Empowering Youth Innovation
At the SXSW Edu Conference, Nandana presented her project in front of a panel of judges and industry leaders. Her clarity of purpose and the positive impact potential of ‘AutBuddy’ earned her the top honor at the competition.

Speaking about her achievement, Nandana said,

“My hope is that AutBuddy will be more than just an app—it will be a bridge between neurodiverse children and a more inclusive society.”

Her win not only celebrates technological innovation but also highlights the growing presence and influence of Indian-American youth in STEM and social entrepreneurship.

A Proud Moment for the Indian-American Community
Nandana Menon’s achievement is being widely celebrated within the Indian-American community, serving as an inspiration for other young minds to use technology for meaningful social impact.

Her story is a testament to how compassion, creativity, and coding can come together to address real-world challenges. With plans to expand AutBuddy’s features and make it available to a broader audience, Nandana is already in discussions with educators, therapists, and autism advocacy groups.
