In an impressive showcase of intellect and articulation, 8th grader Rayansh Prasad Bhargava stood out at the prestigious NYC Urban Debate League (NYCUDL) Novice Championship. Competing alongside teammates Habib Azar and Anav Dey, the trio brought home the championship title after navigating multiple rounds of intense debate.

From Top Seed to Champion

The competition was fierce, featuring the city’s most promising young debaters. After excelling in five qualifying rounds, Bhargava’s team entered the elimination rounds as the top seed in the novice division. Their path to victory included a 2–1 decision in the quarterfinals, a unanimous win in the semifinals, and a commanding performance in the finals to secure the championship.

Recognition Beyond the Team Victory

While the team’s win was a major accomplishment, Rayansh Bhargava’s individual talent also received the spotlight. He was ranked 4th Best Speaker overall, a recognition reserved for students who consistently deliver sharp arguments and demonstrate commanding presence during rounds.

Tackling Real-World Topics with Confidence

The championship rounds challenged students to debate contemporary and often controversial topics—ranging from cash bail reform to civil disobedience and tourism taxes. Participants were required to argue both sides of each topic with only 20 minutes to prepare, pushing them to think critically and speak with clarity under pressure.
