Indian economist Krishnamurthy V. Subramanian has been awarded the University of Chicago’s Alumni Award for Professional Achievement, becoming the first Indian economist to receive this recognition in the award’s 85-year history.
During his tenure as Chief Economic Adviser to the Government of India from 2018 to 2021, Subramanian played a pivotal role in shaping India’s economic policies. His work on India’s Economic Surveys was particularly highlighted by the University, describing them as crucial documents that laid the groundwork for India’s self-reliant economic approach.
Subramanian’s contributions were not limited to India, as he later served as India’s Executive Director at the International Monetary Fund, engaging in economic matters affecting South Asia and emerging markets. His analysis of the COVID-19 economic impact, identifying it as a supply-side disruption and predicting a V-shaped recovery, was also commended.
The University recognized Subramanian’s efforts in addressing policy challenges faced by large emerging economies, emphasizing the importance of his work being rooted in India. Subramanian expressed his gratitude for the award, stating that being part of such an esteemed academic lineage is a humbling experience, especially as it acknowledges work done for and from India.
Subramanian, currently a Professor of Finance at the Indian School of Business, holds a PhD from the University of Chicago Booth School of Business, further solidifying his ties to the institution. With this recent accolade, Subramanian has now been honored by all three of his alma maters, including IIT Kanpur and IIM Calcutta.
India’s economic growth trajectory has been notable in recent years, with a focus on structural reforms, digital infrastructure, and supply-chain diversification to bolster growth. The University of Chicago, renowned for its influence on economic thought globally, continues to shape discussions on markets, monetary policies, and economic development.
