The Indian economy’s total primary energy supply (TPES) expanded by 2.95% in FY2024-25, reaching 9,32,816 KToE. The country’s renewable energy potential stands at 47,04,043 megawatts as of March 31, 2025. Solar energy has seen remarkable growth, reaching 33,43,378 megawatts in FY2024-25, with the highest share at around 71%.
More than 70% of the renewable energy generation potential is concentrated in six states: Rajasthan, Maharashtra, Gujarat, Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka, and Madhya Pradesh. The per-capita energy consumption has increased from 15,296 mega joules/person in FY2015-16 to 18,096 mega joules/person in FY2024-25, showing a CAGR of 1.89% over the years.
Credit flow to India’s energy sector has grown significantly, rising from Rs 1,688 crore in 2021 to Rs 10,325 crore in 2025. Electricity generation from renewable resources has also surged, from 1,89,314 GWH in FY 2015-16 to 4,16,823 GWH in FY 2024-25, with a CAGR of 9.17% over the years. Coal remains the dominant energy source, contributing the most to the total energy supply.
