Union Railways Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw announced Indian Railways’ efforts to modernize train coaches for improved passenger comfort and safety. The initiative involves developing new coach designs and upgraded toilet models. A sample coach has already been retrofitted with these new features to showcase the enhancements.
The minister emphasized the importance of enhancing safety and convenience for passengers through new coach designs and improved toilet facilities. The upgraded coach features enhanced interiors and better sanitation facilities to make train journeys more comfortable. Indian Railways is committed to enhancing the overall travel experience for passengers across its network.
In addition to the coach upgrades, Indian Railways is undertaking infrastructure improvements, including the redevelopment of the New Delhi Railway Station. The project is progressing rapidly with a strong focus on safety and passenger convenience. The station will see the installation of around 1,500 AI-enabled cameras for enhanced surveillance and security.
As part of the station redevelopment plan, railway staff and vendors will receive ID cards and uniforms for better identification. New signages will be installed to assist passengers, and taxi services will be integrated to improve last-mile connectivity. Minister Vaishnaw also highlighted the significant improvements in railway safety, noting a substantial reduction in serious train accidents over the years.
Official data shared by the minister revealed a notable decrease in serious railway accidents, from 135 in 2014-15 to just 14 in 2025-26 (up to February 28). The total number of serious accidents has declined from 1,711 between 2004-05 and 2013-14 to 678 between 2014-15 and 2023-24, accompanied by a decrease in casualties and injuries.
