Indian badminton player Ayush Shetty caused an upset by defeating world No. 4 Jonatan Christie of Indonesia to secure a spot in the semi-finals of the Badminton Asia Championships held at Ningbo Olympic Sports Center. This victory marks Ayush’s first win against Christie and makes him the first Indian men’s singles player to secure a medal at this tournament since 2018.
This win also signifies India’s first medal at the Badminton Asia Championships since Chirag Shetty and Satwiksairaj Rankireddy clinched the men’s doubles gold in 2023. Ayush will face the winner of the match between Kunlavut Vitidsarn of Thailand and Weng Hongyang in the semi-finals.
In a fiercely contested match, Ayush managed to turn the tables against Christie after a tough battle in the opening game. Despite Christie’s initial lead, Ayush fought back, forcing the game into a tie-break and eventually securing his spot in the semi-finals. The second game saw Ayush maintaining his lead and eventually closing out the match to advance.
Ayush’s journey in the tournament has been remarkable, with victories over top-ranked players like Li Shi Feng and Chi Yu Jen in the earlier rounds. However, the tournament saw the exit of other Indian players like PV Sindhu in the second round and Lakshya Sen in the opening round.
