After a hiatus of twenty years, the Indian U20 women’s national team is set to compete in the AFC U20 Women’s Asian Cup Thailand 2026. Their first match against Japan at the Thammasat Stadium in Pathum Thani marks the beginning of a meticulously planned journey aimed at establishing a strong team identity. Head coach Joakim Alexandersson emphasized the team’s blend of ambition and realism, acknowledging the challenges ahead while expressing a desire to qualify for the World Cup.
India’s preparation for the tournament has been comprehensive, involving friendly matches in Kazakhstan, a training camp in Sweden, and home fixtures against Uzbekistan. Alexandersson highlighted the team’s three-month continuous training period, which has significantly enhanced their technical, tactical, and mental capabilities. The team’s evolution since the qualifiers in Myanmar has instilled confidence in their readiness for the upcoming tournament.
Their first opponents, Japan, are a formidable team with a rich history of success in youth competitions. As six-time U20 Asian Cup champions and winners of the U20 Women’s World Cup in 2018, Japan poses a significant challenge for India. Japan’s head coach, Akira Ijiri, has set a clear goal for the team – to progress through the group stage and ultimately win the World Cup. India, placed in Group C alongside Japan, Australia, and Chinese Taipei, must secure a top-two finish or be among the best third-placed teams to advance to the quarter-finals and edge closer to a spot in the FIFA U20 Women’s World Cup Poland 2026.
