As the Indian women’s hockey team undergoes intensive training at the national camp in Bengaluru, the primary emphasis is on improving skills and maintaining tactical discipline. Led by chief coach Sjoerd Marijne and scientific advisor Wayne Lombard, 18-year-old midfielder Sakshi Rana is using this opportunity to refine her abilities and gain insights from her more experienced teammates.
Sakshi, who marked her senior debut last year with a goal against Spain, views the camp as a crucial setting for her daily progress and physical fitness. She appreciates the camp’s constructive environment, mentioning the focus on strength, fitness, recovery, and the detailed explanations provided by the coaching staff. The senior players also play a significant role in motivating the younger players to perform at their best.
Starting her career in midfield, Sakshi’s fast and attacking style was honed at the Pritam Siwach Academy in Sonipat under coach Kuldeep. Now, in the senior team, she is learning to balance her speed with tactical awareness under the guidance of the coaching staff. The team is concentrating on strategies such as ball possession, passing, and understanding the pressure dynamics at the international level.
Sakshi’s experience in the Hockey India League has been instrumental in her development, exposing her to high-level competition and enhancing her communication skills. Drawing inspiration from senior players like Neha Goyal, Sakshi remains focused on continuous improvement as the team prepares for the FIH Hockey World Cup 2026 Qualifiers in Hyderabad, Telangana from March 8 to 14.
