The Indian women’s tennis team has started a five-day preparatory camp at the DLTA Stadium in New Delhi in preparation for the Billie Jean King Cup Group I – Asia/Oceania round-robin. The team, led by captain Vishal Uppal, is focused on securing a third-ever qualification to the prestigious World Group. Members of the team include Ankita Raina, Sahaja Yamalapalli, Vaishnavi Adkar, Shrivalli Bhamidipaty, Rutuja Bhosale, and Vaidehee Chaudhari.
The camp, scheduled from April 1 to 5, is crucial as the team gears up for the tournament at the same venue from April 7 to 11. Under Uppal’s mentorship, a former two-time Davis Cupper, the team is working on match fitness, singles and doubles combinations, and on-court chemistry. They are also getting accustomed to the hard courts that will host 15 matches over five days.
India is preparing to face opponents from New Zealand to the Republic of Korea in the upcoming tournament. The Delhi Lawn Tennis Association, the tournament hosts, will provide free entry for supporters to cheer for the team from the center courts. Uppal emphasized the importance of consistency and decision-making in key moments due to the strong competition in the group.
India aims to maintain its momentum after successful results in the previous Billie Jean King Cup Asia & Oceania Group I Qualifiers. The team secured victories over Hong Kong, Chinese Taipei, Thailand, and the Republic of Korea. With New Zealand, Indonesia, and Mongolia also competing this year, India is targeting a top-two finish to advance its World Group aspirations. The team is focused on performance and hopes to secure a spot in the World Group for the third time, leveraging home advantage and recent strong performances for a successful campaign.
