The Indian youth boxing team had a successful start at the World Boxing Futures Cup 2026 in Bangkok, Thailand. Joyshree Devi Chirom, Ambekar Meetei Lairenlakpam, and Sahil Duhan secured victories on the tournament’s opening day. Joyshree Devi Chirom won in the women’s 54kg category with a Referee Stopped Contest (RSC) victory in the second round against a competitor from Tajikistan.
Ambekar Meetei Lairenlakpam (50kg) and Sahil Duhan (60kg) also triumphed in the men’s division, both claiming 5-0 unanimous decision victories over opponents from the Philippines and China, respectively. The Indian team is participating in the Youth Olympic weight categories, emphasizing the event’s importance in qualification and preparation for the Youth Olympic Games.
The World Boxing Futures Cup, taking place from March 8 to 15, gathers talented youth boxers worldwide, offering crucial international competition exposure. Last year, Indian youth boxers excelled at the 3rd Asian Youth Games in Bahrain, securing seven medals, including four gold, marking a historic achievement for India in youth boxing at the continental level.
India has entered a 10-member squad across men’s and women’s divisions. The women’s team includes Gunjan (48kg), Chandrika Bhoreshi Pujari (51kg), Joyshree Devi Chirom (54kg), Radhamani Longjam (57kg), and Prachi (60kg). The men’s team comprises Ambekar Meetei Lairenlakpam (50kg), Udham Singh Raghav (55kg), Sahil Duhan (60kg), Aman Siwach (65kg), and Priyansh Sehrawat (70kg).
Boxing Federation of India President Ajay Singh highlighted the significance of the World Boxing Futures Cup for young boxers. He emphasized the exposure to international competition and the opportunity to face top talent globally. Singh expressed confidence in the team’s determination and readiness for the tournament.
