India’s Ministry of Defence has signed a significant contract with Bharat Electronics Limited for the procurement of two advanced Mountain Radars for the Indian Air Force. Valued at around Rs 1,950 crore, the deal was finalized in the national capital with officials from both sides present.
Under the ‘Buy (Indian–Indigenously Designed, Developed and Manufactured)’ category, the contract aims to boost India’s indigenous defence capabilities in line with the Aatmanirbhar Bharat and Make in India initiatives. The Mountain Radar system, developed by the Defence Research and Development Organisation, will enhance the Indian Air Force’s surveillance capabilities, especially in challenging mountainous terrains.
Manufacturing responsibility for the radars will be undertaken by Bharat Electronics Limited, a prominent defence public sector undertaking. This procurement is expected to strengthen India’s air defence network, enhance national security, and promote indigenous design and production in the domestic defence industry.
The installation and commissioning of these radars are anticipated to reduce dependency on foreign equipment, contributing to technological advancement within the country. This move aligns with the government’s focus on self-reliance in defence manufacturing and boosting the domestic defence industry ecosystem.
