INS Surat: India’s Most Advanced Destroyer Set for Grand Commissioning

The Indian Navy is on the brink of an exciting chapter with the commissioning of INS Surat, its newest and most advanced guided-missile destroyer. Set to join the fleet on January 15 at the Naval Dockyard in Mumbai, INS Surat represents a giant leap in India’s naval capabilities. This state-of-the-art warship is a part of the Project 15B series, the fourth and final vessel of this prestigious class, and will contribute significantly to the nation’s defense strength.

At 164 meters long and displacing 7,400 tons, INS Surat is among the largest and most advanced destroyers globally. Equipped with a Combined Gas and Gas (COGAG) propulsion system, it can reach speeds of over 30 knots, showcasing its agility and power during sea trials. Its design and construction are an epitome of India’s push toward self-reliance, with 75% of its components locally sourced.

A key feature of INS Surat is its integration of artificial intelligence (AI), a first for an Indian Navy destroyer. AI-powered solutions enhance the ship’s operational capabilities, providing real-time data analysis and advanced decision-making processes. This will greatly increase its efficiency in combat and other maritime operations. The commissioning of INS Surat is a part of a significant naval milestone as India also welcomes other frontline combatants, including INS Nilgiri, the first ship of the Project 17A stealth frigate class, and INS Vaghsheer, a Scorpene-class submarine.
