An escalation of fighting in Sudan’s Kordofan region has resulted in casualties among civilians, destruction of homes, hospitals, and other civilian structures, according to UN humanitarians. The UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) highlighted that the violence has also hindered relief workers’ access to civilians in need of assistance.
In South Kordofan, clashes between the Rapid Support Forces and the Sudanese Armed Forces have intensified, causing disruptions along crucial routes leading to the city of Dilling. Additionally, a drone strike on the Dilling General Hospital this week led to the deaths of at least four patients and injuries to several civilians, as reported by humanitarian partners.
The situation in the town of Kadugli has also worsened, creating a volatile security environment for communities and humanitarian responders. Incidents in North Kordofan, particularly along the Kosti-El Obeid road, have raised concerns for both humanitarian and commercial supply chains. The city of El Obeid has faced ongoing drone attacks over the past five days, targeting a hospital and government facilities, as per Xinhua news agency.
OCHA has reiterated the importance of all parties adhering to international humanitarian law, emphasizing the protection of civilians and civilian infrastructure, as well as facilitating humanitarian access. The UN Security Council had previously expressed deep concern over the violence in Sudan, including in Kordofan and Darfur states, urging an immediate halt to the conflict and condemning attacks on civilians and humanitarian personnel.
