The International Women’s Day is observed globally on Sunday to recognize women’s achievements in various spheres. In India, the theme for 2026, ‘Give to Gain,’ emphasizes teamwork and cohesion for women’s empowerment. Over the years, Nari Shakti has become central to India’s progress, shifting towards women-led development.
In recent years, the Indian government has transitioned from development for women to empowering them as key drivers of economic and social advancement. Various women-centric schemes like Lakhpati Didi program and NaMo Drone Didi Yojana have highlighted the government’s focus on women’s role in India’s growth story. Flagship initiatives such as Ujjwala Yojana and Jal Jeevan Mission have significantly impacted women’s lives.
Under the Pradhan Mantri Ujjwala Yojana, more than 10.56 crore LPG connections have been provided to women, improving health and reducing air pollution exposure. The Jal Jeevan Mission has expanded rural tap water coverage, benefiting over 81.57% of households and reducing women’s water-fetching burden. The Swachh Bharat Mission has enhanced sanitation and privacy for women through the construction of over 12 crore toilets.
Through initiatives like Deendayal Antyodaya Yojana, millions of women have transitioned from unpaid labor to organized enterprise, with over 10 crore rural households engaged in Self-Help Groups. Programs like Lakhpati Didi and Drone Didi Yojana have enabled women to establish sustainable livelihoods and integrate into technology ecosystems. The Pradhan Mantri MUDRA Yojana has sanctioned over 52 crore loans, with 68% of beneficiaries being women.
Women’s participation in various schemes like Jan Dhan accounts, Stand-Up India, and Pradhan Mantri Kaushal Vikas Yojana showcases their increasing role in economic development. Regulations such as Mission Shakti and POSH Act have been effective in addressing discrimination and ensuring safe working environments for women. The government’s focus on women’s upliftment and participation in policy-making remains a priority.
This year’s budget emphasizes gender equality, with 9% of the Union Budget allocated to programs advancing women’s development. Across sectors, Rs 5.01 lakh crore has been earmarked by various Ministries and Union Territories, signifying a shift towards sustained investment in women’s empowerment.
