The Andhra Pradesh Police arrested IPS officer Sunil Nayak in Bihar for his involvement in the alleged custodial torture of Deputy Speaker K Raghurama Krishna Raju in 2021. Nayak, who previously served as the Deputy Inspector General of the Crime Investigation Department in Andhra Pradesh, is being brought back to Guntur where a case against him has been registered. Nayak, an IPS officer of the Bihar cadre, had served in Andhra Pradesh on deputation.
Following the change of government, Nayak returned to Bihar and is currently serving as the Inspector General of the Fire Services Department. The incident involving Raju, who was arrested for making derogatory remarks against the then Chief Minister, led to a case being registered against Jagan Mohan Reddy and others after a complaint by Raju. In 2024, an FIR was filed against Jagan Mohan Reddy, three IPS officers, and others based on Raju’s allegations of an attempt on his life during police custody.
The FIR named several officials including the then CID chief P.V. Sunil Kumar, Intelligence Chief Seetharamanjaneyulu, Chief Minister Jagan Mohan Reddy, Sunil Nayak, and other police personnel. Despite being summoned for questioning last year, Nayak did not appear. Raju, who was initially elected to the Lok Sabha as a YSR Congress Party member, later turned rebel and faced arrest for his criticisms against the government.
Raju claimed mistreatment during his arrest, alleging that he was physically assaulted and denied medical attention while in police custody. He accused specific individuals of attempting to harm him despite his medical condition, leading to a serious allegation of an attempt on his life.
