Israeli military conducts airstrikes in southern Lebanon targeting Hezbollah sites

The Israeli military conducted airstrikes in southern Lebanon on Monday, specifically targeting Hezbollah sites. A military spokesperson stated that the Israel Defence Forces (IDF) struck several Hezbollah terrorists in the Sidon area of southern Lebanon. Talks between the two sides, focusing on Hezbollah’s disarmament and the safe return of residents to Lebanon’s southern border villages, were held under US coordination in the town of Naqoura in southwest Lebanon. Representing Israel in the talks was Yosef Dreznin, the Israeli Deputy Director for Foreign Policy at the National Security Council, while Lebanon’s former ambassador to the United States, Simon Karam, led the Lebanese delegation. Discussions during the meeting centered on Hezbollah’s disarmament and the advancement of economic projects, emphasizing the mutual interest in countering Hezbollah and ensuring long-term security for communities on both sides of the border. The Lebanese presidency highlighted Lebanon’s firm stance on the humanitarian and national importance of enabling displaced villagers to safely return home. Despite a ceasefire agreement in place between Hezbollah and Israel since November 27, 2024, Israel has continued to carry out sporadic strikes to eliminate perceived Hezbollah threats. Earlier this month, the first direct talks between the two countries in Naqoura were described by Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu as an initial step towards fostering relations and economic cooperation between Israel and Lebanon. On December 14, three Hezbollah members were killed, and a fourth was wounded in Israeli drone strikes in southern Lebanon, according to Lebanese officials and security sources. The state-run National News Agency of Lebanon reported that Israeli drones targeted individuals in various locations, resulting in casualties. A Lebanese security source confirmed that those killed were Hezbollah members. The Israeli military justified the strikes by stating that the militants were engaged in activities to re-establish Hezbollah’s terror infrastructure, which violated the agreements between Israel and Lebanon following the ceasefire in November 2024.
