Four-time champion Italy has missed out on qualifying for a third consecutive FIFA World Cup, losing to Bosnia and Herzegovina in a tense playoff decided by penalties. The match, held in Zenica, ended 1-1 after extra time, with Bosnia prevailing 4-1 in the shootout to secure their first World Cup appearance since 2014.
Italy defender Leonardo Spinazzola expressed disbelief, stating, “We still can’t believe it. It’s upsetting for everyone.” Head coach Gennaro Guttuso issued an apology post-match, acknowledging that the team had not met expectations.
Italy initially took the lead in Zenica through Moise Kean after a mistake by Bosnia goalkeeper Nikola Vasilj. However, the match shifted when Italy’s Alessandro Bastoni was red-carded before halftime, leaving them with 10 men and defending against Bosnia’s attacks.
Despite Italy’s efforts to hold on to their lead, Bosnia managed to equalize through Haris Tabakovic in the 79th minute, leading to a penalty shootout that sealed Italy’s fate. Sandro Tonali was the lone Italian to score from the spot, while Bosnia converted all four penalties, including the decisive kick by Esmir Bajraktarevic.
Italy’s loss marks their third consecutive absence from the World Cup, having previously missed out on the 2018 and 2022 editions. The Azzurri’s last World Cup appearance was in 2014 in Brazil, where they were eliminated in the group stage.
In other playoff results, the Czech Republic advanced past Denmark in a penalty shootout, while Sweden secured qualification with a 3-2 win over Poland. Türkiye also booked their place at the World Cup with a 1-0 victory against Kosovo.
With the conclusion of the European playoffs, all 16 of UEFA’s spots at the 2026 FIFA World Cup have been determined. The tournament is scheduled to take place in the United States, Canada, and Mexico from June 11 to July 19, featuring 48 competing teams.
