The Jaipur Municipal Corporation (JMC) took action on Monday by sealing properties associated with two prominent hotel groups, Ramada and Marriott, due to long-overdue Urban Development (UD) tax payments. The enforcement, targeting Hotel Marriott near Jawahar Circle and Hotel Ramada in Raja Park, was swiftly reversed within two hours of the outstanding dues being settled.
A revenue team from the Malviya Nagar Zone sealed the luxury car showroom and a restaurant linked to Hotel Marriott, which owed Rs 5.97 crore in UD taxes. Concurrently, properties related to Hotel Ramada, with pending dues of Rs 1.36 crore, were also sealed during the operation.
Representatives from both hotel groups promptly visited the Municipal Corporation office as the enforcement action unfolded and resolved the issue by submitting the outstanding amounts through cheques. Following the settlement, all sealed properties were promptly reopened.
The enforcement action was triggered by the failure of the luxury car showroom and restaurant associated with Hotel Marriott to pay UD taxes dating back to 2007, despite multiple reminders. Similarly, Hotel Ramada had disputed its tax classification since 2007, with the hotel advocating for an “industrial” tax category while the Corporation insisted on a “commercial” classification.
Urban Development (UD) Tax is an annual levy imposed on immovable properties within urban local body limits, serving as a crucial revenue stream for municipal corporations to finance essential civic services like road maintenance, sewerage systems, and urban infrastructure development. The tax applies to residential plots exceeding 300 square meters, with commercial establishments such as hotels, hospitals, coaching centers, and institutions subject to category-specific tax rates.
