External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar, on a visit to Mauritius, reiterated India’s dedication to enhancing bilateral relations with the island nation. He commended Mauritius for hosting the 9th Indian Ocean Conference and thanked Prime Minister Navinchandra Ramgoolam for the warm reception extended to him and his delegation.
Reflecting on the progress achieved in a little over a year, Jaishankar recalled Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s visit to Mauritius in March 2025, where both countries upgraded their relationship to an “Enhanced Strategic Partnership.” This decision symbolizes the enduring historical, cultural, and trust-based ties between the two nations, fostering collaboration across various sectors.
Emphasizing the significance of development cooperation, Jaishankar mentioned the jointly announced Special Economic Package from last year, now being implemented through the Exchange of Letters. He also highlighted India’s assistance in healthcare, inaugurating a Renal Transplant Unit at Jawaharlal Nehru Hospital, and ongoing projects like the AYUSH Centre of Excellence and community development initiatives in Mauritius, Rodrigues, and Agalega, with a focus on sustainable energy cooperation.
India’s support to Mauritius includes e-buses, solar power projects, and partnerships under the International Solar Alliance and Global Biofuels Alliance. Additionally, an Indian firm is working on Mauritius’ inaugural floating solar power venture. On defense and security, Jaishankar announced the upcoming deployment of a Defense Attache in Mauritius to enhance maritime cooperation and joint hydrography services.
Highlighting capacity-building efforts, Jaishankar mentioned the launch of the iGOT Karmayogi portal for Mauritian civil servants, making Mauritius the first country to receive a tailored version of the platform. He also touched upon education and labor cooperation, referencing agreements between the University Grants Commission and Mauritius’ Higher Education Commission, as well as the operationalization of a labor MoU. Energy security was underscored, with India and Mauritius finalizing a government-to-government pact for oil and gas supply.
In conclusion, Jaishankar reiterated India’s commitment to its “Neighborhood First Policy, Vision Mahasagar, and Global South” priorities, emphasizing the exceptional and enduring nature of the partnership with Mauritius.
