External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar hailed the opening of Mauritius’ first dedicated renal transplant unit as a significant milestone, emphasizing the deepening healthcare collaboration between the two countries. Speaking at the inauguration at Jawaharlal Nehru Hospital, Jaishankar highlighted the historical ties between India and Mauritius, underscoring the enduring bond that shapes their relationship. He conveyed Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s warm regards to the Mauritian people, emphasizing the familial connection between the two nations.

The minister expressed admiration for the fusion of Indian heritage with Mauritian identity, praising how the shared history has evolved into a unique Mauritian culture. Jaishankar reiterated Modi’s sentiment that Mauritius is not just a partner but a part of India’s family, emphasizing the strong emotional and practical ties between the two nations. The inauguration of the renal transplant unit was lauded as a momentous occasion, offering hope and improved healthcare accessibility for kidney patients in Mauritius.

Jaishankar stressed the importance of providing quality healthcare to all individuals and lauded the establishment of the renal transplant unit as a crucial step in that direction. He commended the Jawahar Lal Nehru Hospital as a symbol of the longstanding cooperation between India and Mauritius in the healthcare sector, highlighting the institution’s dedication to serving the Mauritian population. The minister also recalled India’s support to Mauritius during the Covid-19 pandemic, emphasizing the countries’ solidarity and mutual assistance during challenging times.

Healthcare was described as a fundamental aspect of preserving human dignity, with Jaishankar emphasizing the shared commitment of India and Mauritius to ensuring healthcare access for all. The minister underscored the personal and immediate impact of healthcare cooperation between the two nations, citing the Jawahar Lal Nehru Hospital’s legacy of providing healthcare services to generations of Mauritian families. Jaishankar highlighted India’s vaccine assistance to Mauritius during the pandemic, showcasing the countries’ collaborative efforts in healthcare.

Jaishankar highlighted the special place of healthcare in the economic package announced during Mauritius Prime Minister Navinchandra Ramgoolam’s recent visit to India. He mentioned upcoming projects such as the Sir Seewoosagur Ramgoolam National Hospital, Ayush Center of Excellence, and a veterinary school and animal hospital, underscoring the expansion of healthcare cooperation between India and Mauritius.
