Bollywood is buzzing with excitement as two cinematic heavyweights—Kareena Kapoor Khan and Prithviraj Sukumaran—join hands for Daayra, an upcoming crime thriller directed by critically acclaimed filmmaker Meghna Gulzar. Known for her emotionally charged and socially conscious narratives, Meghna is now diving into the gritty world of crime and law enforcement with a story that promises suspense, intensity, and realism.

A First-Time Collaboration Packed with Star Power

This marks the first-ever collaboration between Kareena Kapoor and Prithviraj Sukumaran—two celebrated performers known for their depth and versatility. While Kareena is a Bollywood veteran celebrated for her dynamic range in roles from Chameli to Jaane Jaan, Prithviraj is a powerhouse in South Indian cinema, known for both his commercial blockbusters and intense character portrayals.

Meghna Gulzar, best known for films like Raazi, Talvar, and Chhapaak, has carved a niche for herself with stories rooted in reality and human complexity. With Daayra, she is set to explore the murky moral landscapes of crime and justice, blending emotional storytelling with the pulse of a thriller.

Inspired by Real Events: A Story with Teeth

Daayra is reported to be inspired by a real-life crime incident that shook the conscience of the nation. While specific details of the case remain under wraps, insiders suggest the narrative will examine not just the crime itself but its ripple effects on those directly and indirectly involved—from victims and families to law enforcement officers caught in the crosshairs of justice and pressure.

The film’s title, Daayra, which translates to circle or boundary, is symbolic of the psychological and emotional boundaries people cross—willingly or unwillingly—in the face of extreme circumstances.

Kareena’s Role: Gritty, Bold, and Unlike Anything Seen Before

Kareena Kapoor is all set to deliver one of her most challenging and intense performances yet. Although her exact character arc is being kept confidential, early reports hint at her portraying a role with strong emotional undercurrents—possibly that of a civilian entangled in a high-stakes crime, or someone on the cusp of justice and vengeance. The role is said to be transformative and layered, demanding emotional range and psychological depth.

Prithviraj Sukumaran Steps into the Role of a Relentless Cop

After actors Ayushmann Khurrana and Sidharth Malhotra exited the project due to scheduling conflicts, the makers approached Prithviraj Sukumaran, who quickly came on board. He will be seen portraying a no-nonsense police officer, determined to uncover the truth behind a disturbing crime. With his commanding screen presence and subtle intensity, Prithviraj is expected to bring gravitas and tension to the role.

What to Expect: A Strong Script, Bold Themes, and Visual Realism

The film is co-written by Meghna Gulzar, along with writers Sima and Yash, and is being produced by Junglee Pictures, a banner known for backing content-rich cinema. Daayra is expected to dive deep into themes such as justice, corruption, trauma, and the emotional toll of violent crime—handled through a sensitive yet thrilling cinematic lens.

The screenplay is already being touted as one of the most hard-hitting works from Gulzar yet, with insider reports describing it as “emotionally raw, investigative, and grounded in realism.”

Shooting Timeline and Release Plans

Currently in the pre-production stage, Daayra is expected to go on floors in late 2024. The film will be shot in multiple real-world locations across India, adding to its grounded tone. The release is tentatively slated for 2026, aligning with Meghna Gulzar’s signature approach of giving each film ample development and execution time.

A Film to Watch Out For

With a compelling premise, a visionary director, and an exceptional cast, Daayra is shaping up to be one of the most anticipated crime thrillers in Indian cinema. Whether you’re a fan of thought-provoking narratives, crime mysteries, or powerhouse performances, Daayra is a film worth watching out for in the coming years.
