The Congress-led Karnataka government, following intervention from the All India Congress Committee, announced the provision of alternative houses for individuals who lost shelter during a demolition drive in Kogilu Layout, Bengaluru. Chief Minister Siddaramaiah, along with State Congress President and Deputy Chief Minister D.K. Shivakumar, disclosed this decision after a high-level meeting in Bengaluru. The government emphasized that despite the illegal nature of the constructed houses, alternative housing was being offered on humanitarian grounds.
New houses will be allocated to those affected by the demolition on New Year’s Day within a 7-km radius of Kogilu. The government has constructed one lakh houses with the specific aim of providing housing for the underprivileged. Strict actions will be taken against officials involved in future illegal encroachments on government land, as warned by Chief Minister Siddaramaiah.
The decision to provide alternative housing at Baiyappanahalli was made after consultations with key officials. Approximately 1,087 houses in Survey No. 23 will be allocated to beneficiaries in multi-storey buildings. Each house, constructed at a cost of around Rs 11.20 lakh, will receive subsidies from both state and Central governments. Housing Minister Zameer Ahmed Khan will facilitate loans for the remaining amounts after verification.
Verification processes are set to be completed within two days to ensure the occupation of houses by January 1. The government’s stance on providing government-built houses to those affected by the demolition is limited to this specific case. Chief Minister Siddaramaiah reiterated the importance of preventing future illegal constructions on government land and holding officials accountable for any such occurrences.
