The Karnataka High Court has restricted the home food privilege previously granted to Pavithra Gowda, the partner of incarcerated Kannada actor Darshan, along with other accused individuals. This decision also affects Laxman and Nagaraj, who were also denied the same facility. The court’s ruling, led by Justice M. Nagaprasanna, emphasized adherence to the Supreme Court’s directives on such matters.
Pavithra Gowda, currently held at Bengaluru Central Prison, had earlier been allowed to receive home-cooked meals once a week, a decision now challenged by the prosecution through a writ petition. The High Court, citing the Supreme Court’s stance against special treatment for inmates, underscored the importance of equality under the law, regardless of one’s status. The case pertains to the abduction and murder of Renukaswamy, with Darshan, Pavithra Gowda, and others facing charges in connection with the incident.
Following the circulation of images suggesting preferential treatment within the prison, Darshan was relocated to Ballari prison. He is currently entangled in three FIRs linked to the case, with a substantial charge sheet presented before the court. Despite a brief release on bail, the Supreme Court’s intervention prompted a re-arrest of Darshan, Pavithra Gowda, and the co-accused individuals. Legal proceedings have progressed, with charges framed against them, including Darshan facing multiple sections under the Indian Penal Code for various offenses.
