Karnataka Home Minister G. Parameshwara expressed worries about the proposed delimitation of Assembly and Lok Sabha constituencies, emphasizing that population should not be the sole basis for this process. He highlighted that Karnataka might receive fewer Lok Sabha seats, around 66, due to the emphasis on population, especially compared to states in North India with larger populations.
Addressing Chief Minister Siddaramaiah’s remarks on potential injustice to Karnataka in the delimitation, Parameshwara supported the call for population not to be the determining factor. He noted the successful implementation of family planning in South India, reducing the region’s population, and stressed the importance of this not becoming a drawback.
Regarding the controversy surrounding the non-compulsory status of Hindi in Class 10 exams and the protests by Kannada organizations, Parameshwara acknowledged the historical opposition to Hindi in Karnataka. He emphasized the need for resolving the issue to ensure adequate representation for regional languages like Kannada, emphasizing the importance of addressing such matters in non-Hindi-speaking southern states.
