Kolkata Knight Riders’ head coach Abhishek Nayar expressed disappointment over Australian all-rounder Cameron Green’s inability to bowl in the ongoing 2026 Indian Premier League (IPL). Green, bought for Rs 25.2 crore by KKR, missed bowling in their recent match due to a lower back injury, confirmed by Cricket Australia. The franchise had envisioned Green as a potential replacement for Andre Russell.
Nayar highlighted the unpredictability of sports, stating that despite the setback, they had a long-term strategy in place. He emphasized the importance of selecting players based on their overall skill set and value addition to the team. Nayar explained that Green’s role was crucial in maintaining the legacy left by Russell in a different capacity.
Addressing concerns about injuries and fitness, Nayar defended the decision to invest in Green, considering his abilities and potential contributions. He stressed the significance of looking beyond immediate circumstances during player auctions and tournaments. The franchise’s focus remains on the player’s capabilities and the positive impact they can bring to the team.
Nayar also expressed confidence in wrist-spinner Varun Chakaravarthy’s abilities, acknowledging the challenges he has faced since the T20 World Cup. Despite Varun’s recent struggles, Nayar believed in his mental resilience and backed him to overcome the current hurdles. The coach urged support for Varun, emphasizing his past successes and the belief that he would bounce back stronger in the upcoming matches.
