Five live 7.65 mm cartridges were discovered in a student’s bag at the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Bombay in Powai during a security check following a money dispute between students. An FIR has been filed, and an investigation is underway after a campus security officer reported the incident to Powai Police. The cartridges are believed to have been brought from Bihar, prompting the police to delve into this connection.
A security officer was alerted about a quarrel between two students in Hostel No. 1 at around 1:30 a.m. on February 19. The dispute, which arose over a financial matter, involved Suraj Dubey and another student named Aman. Upon intervention by the hostel’s security team, the situation was defused, but suspicions were raised when alcohol was detected on Suraj Dubey and his friend during the interaction. Subsequently, a search of their rooms led to the discovery of the live cartridges in a bag belonging to one of them.
The cartridges, marked ‘KF 7.65’, were found in the bag’s front compartment and were linked to Sarvottam Anand Satishchandra Chaudhary, a visitor from Bihar. Chaudhary, who admitted to purchasing the cartridges from Munger, was detained for questioning upon his return to the campus. The incident has sparked concerns over security at the prestigious institution, with authorities now investigating the reasons behind bringing the ammunition onto the campus and potential connections to illegal arms supply networks.
