Amid a health crisis in Indore’s Bhagirathpura area caused by contaminated water, resulting in multiple deaths, the Madhya Pradesh government has taken action against senior officials of the city’s municipal corporation. The government issued a show-cause notice to Indore Municipal Commissioner Dilip Kumar Yadav and Additional Commissioner Rohit Sisonia, who has been immediately transferred from Indore. Pradeep Nigam, the In-charge Superintendent Engineer of the Water distribution department of the Indore Municipal Corporation, has also been relieved of his duties.
Following a high-level meeting chaired by Chief Minister Mohan Yadav in Bhopal, the state government directed the Indore Municipal Corporation to promptly fill the vacant positions. The Chief Minister reviewed the state government’s actions in the contaminated drinking water case in Indore and issued necessary directives. Criticism has emerged from both the Opposition Congress and the BJP, demanding strict action against those accountable for the tragedy.
Veteran BJP leader Uma Bharti expressed concern over the incident, labeling it a “shame” and “disgrace” for the state administration. The uncertainty surrounding the number of deaths due to contaminated water consumption in Indore’s Bhagirathpura area remains a topic of debate. Indore Mayor Pushyamitra Bhargav and the state administration have conflicting reports on the death toll, with the mayor mentioning 10 deaths while the health department reported four deaths.
According to a health bulletin from the Indore district administration, over 1,400 people have been affected by vomiting and diarrhea in Bhagirathpura in the past nine days. The bulletin also stated that 208 patients are currently admitted in different hospitals in Indore, with 27 in ICUs, and 101 patients were discharged on Friday.
