Actress-director Maggie Gyllenhaal revealed that a tattoo she saw at a party inspired her upcoming film ‘The Bride!’. The 48-year-old filmmaker decided to direct the new Gothic romance movie after spotting a man with a tattoo of the Bride of Frankenstein. This led her to watch the original 1935 film starring Boris Karloff and Elsa Lanchester.
Maggie shared that her lack of prior exposure to Bride of Frankenstein gave her a fresh perspective while working on the movie. She expressed how the process felt new and exciting as she delved into the project with openness and curiosity. The actress was particularly intrigued by Elsa Lanchester’s portrayal of the Bride, noting the character’s minimal screen time but significant impact.
The actress clarified that she and lead star Jessie Buckley did not aim to mimic Lanchester’s appearance in the film. Despite not setting out to replicate the original Bride of Frankenstein, the final look of the character ended up subtly referencing the iconic hair. Maggie and Jessie spent time collaborating and gathering inspiration before the Actors’ Strike, leading to a unique interpretation of the character.
