The Maharashtra State Election Commission has requested a detailed report from Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) Commissioner Bhushan Gagrani. This action comes after complaints by certain candidates who alleged that returning officers in Colaba, South Mumbai, refused to accept their nomination forms on the final filing day. The controversy involves wards 225, 226, and 227 in the Colaba constituency, where relatives of BJP leader and Maharashtra Assembly Speaker Rahul Narwekar are contesting the upcoming BMC elections.
A senior official from the State Election Commission mentioned that the BMC commissioner received complaints from candidates claiming that their nomination forms were not accepted by returning officers in the three wards on the submission deadline. The Commission, in response to public and media reactions, has asked for a report from BMC Commissioner Bhushan Gagrani, who also serves as the election officer for the BMC polls in Mumbai.
The SEC official clarified that the political parties behind the complaints have not been confirmed yet, nor have the allegations been specifically directed at any particular political figure. Once the report from the BMC commissioner is received, the State Election Commission will make an appropriate decision based on the findings.
