In a significant move for road safety, the Maharashtra Police has enforced a rule requiring all police officers and personnel to wear helmets while riding two-wheelers. The directive, issued by the Director General of Police (DGP) to all police units in the state, aims to set an example for law enforcement. Failure to comply will result in strict disciplinary measures, as emphasized by the DGP following a recent meeting in Nagpur.

A study by the Maharashtra Police reveals that two-wheeler riders contribute to 35-40% of fatal or severe injuries in road accidents over the last decade. Wearing helmets is crucial in reducing the risk of fatal head injuries, yet compliance varies across different regions of the state. While major cities like Mumbai and Nagpur show over 80% helmet usage, some districts record less than 20% compliance.

Under the new rule, any police personnel caught without a helmet while on duty will face penalties under Section 194(D) of the Motor Vehicles Act. Instances of violations shared on social media will be considered severe misconduct, impacting the officer’s career progression. The Police Department has instructed immediate compliance and the submission of a report to headquarters promptly. This initiative is seen as a pivotal step in promoting road safety, with officials believing that public awareness on helmet importance will increase when police officers lead by example.
