A Village in Crisis: Umklai’s Battle with Water Scarcity

Tucked away in the lush, green hills of Meghalaya, the village of Umklai was facing a silent crisis. Despite abundant rainfall, the villagers struggled with a lack of clean and accessible water. Women and children bore the brunt of this burden, trekking long distances to fetch water—often from unclean sources. The strain affected health, education, and livelihoods.

One Woman, One Vision: Mairang Lyngdoh’s Mission

Amid government inaction and broken infrastructure, Mairang Lyngdoh, a schoolteacher and lifelong resident of Umklai, decided to take matters into her own hands. With no formal engineering background, she turned to traditional ecological wisdom passed down through generations.

She held community meetings, spoke to elders, and gathered knowledge on ancient water practices. Her approach? Simple, low-cost, and driven by community power.

The Solution: Harvesting Hope from Rain

  • Under Mairang’s leadership, Umklai began to transform. Using local materials and traditional techniques, the villagers:
  • Built Rainwater Harvesting Systems: Collecting and storing rain from rooftops ensured a year-round water source.
  • Rejuvenated Natural Springs: Revived dried-up springs using natural filtration and recharge pits.
  • Constructed Underground Reservoirs: Clay-lined storage pits helped store clean water with minimal evaporation.
  • Used Gravity-Fed Water Channels: Without electricity, water reached homes through channels that followed the land’s slope.

The Impact: A Community Reborn

  • The results were nothing short of transformative:
  • Children returned to school—no longer burdened with daily water chores.
  • Women gained time and autonomy, taking up income-generating activities.
  • Health improved, with a marked drop in waterborne illnesses.
  • Community pride soared, as the village reclaimed its dignity and self-sufficiency.

Looking Ahead: Water for All, Clean and Equitable

While recognition came from state authorities and environmental groups, Mairang’s vision remains firmly rooted in service. She now dreams of creating affordable water purification systems for every home, believing that clean water is not a luxury—it’s a right.

A Beacon of Resilience and Innovation

Mairang Lyngdoh’s journey is more than a story of survival—it’s one of transformation. In a region often overlooked, she proved that leadership, when fueled by compassion and community, can solve even the most persistent challenges.

Her legacy? A thriving village, a hopeful future, and a message to the world: change begins with one determined soul.
