The Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation (AMC) initiated a significant anti-encroachment operation near Bandarvat (Vanarvat) lake in the Vatva area. The drive, which started in the morning and lasted until late evening, involved heavy machinery and police presence to clear illegally occupied spaces where unauthorized residential constructions had taken place.
Officials stated that the purpose of the drive was to reclaim the area that had been encroached upon by residential structures without proper authorization. The operation saw the demolition of approximately 430 residential houses and 30 commercial buildings. The focus was on clearing around 58,000 square meters of land, including the Vanarvat Lake and TP Road, from encroachment.
According to the AMC, the area previously housed a water body that was encroached upon by builders for constructing residential properties. To facilitate better water management and prevent waterlogging, a project has been initiated to connect Mahalaxmi Lake, Ropar Lake, and Vanarvat Lake. Those who resided in the area before 2010 with valid documents will be offered alternative housing as per the corporation’s policy.
Deputy Municipal Commissioner B.C. Parmar confirmed the ongoing demolition work at Vanarvat Lake and highlighted the efforts to alleviate water pressure in the region. The corporation’s stance is that any illegal construction within the water body is against public interest, with arrangements made for a shelter home accommodating hundreds of families, along with provisions for food and water.
