West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee criticized the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) for a dispute involving President Droupadi Murmu. The issue arose when a smaller venue was allotted by the West Bengal government for the 9th International Santal Conference in Darjeeling district, where the President was the chief guest. Banerjee accused the BJP of using the President’s office to tarnish West Bengal’s image.
Addressing a protest against the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) in central Kolkata, Banerjee expressed disappointment over the BJP’s actions. She emphasized the importance of respecting the President and criticized the alleged political exploitation by the BJP. Banerjee clarified that the state government was not involved in organizing the International Santal Conclave, refuting accusations of deliberate obstruction.
Banerjee defended the state government’s position, highlighting that they were unaware of the event details. She questioned the feasibility of attending every event, particularly if they occur frequently. Banerjee emphasized her commitment to public service and the challenges of balancing various responsibilities. Additionally, she underscored her prioritization of serving the common people over political agendas.
Reacting to the President’s concerns about tribal development in West Bengal, Banerjee questioned the President’s silence on similar issues in other states. She criticized the selective targeting of West Bengal and highlighted the need for consistent advocacy for tribal communities nationwide. Banerjee emphasized the importance of addressing atrocities against tribal people regardless of the state.
