West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee expressed deep sorrow over the passing of veteran politician Mukul Roy, who was once a significant figure in the Trinamool Congress. Roy, a longtime political ally of Banerjee, played a crucial role in the party’s early days and was instrumental in its formation. Banerjee referred to him as her “comrade-in-arms” in a heartfelt social media post.
Roy, who served as a Union Minister and was widely respected within the party, made significant contributions to Bengal’s political landscape. Despite briefly leaving the Trinamool Congress, he later rejoined, leaving a lasting impact on the state’s politics. His sudden demise has been deeply felt across political circles, transcending party lines.
In a message of condolence, Banerjee extended her sympathies to Roy’s family and supporters, acknowledging his leadership and dedication. She specifically addressed Roy’s son, Shubhranshu, urging him to stay strong during this difficult time. Roy, a former Trinamool Congress legislator, passed away early Monday morning after battling prolonged health issues.
Roy’s political journey saw him switch between the BJP and Trinamool Congress, ultimately returning to his former party after the 2021 West Bengal Assembly elections. Despite his political affiliations, he continued to serve as a BJP legislator until his demise.
