West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee sent flowers and sweets to Tarique Rahman following his party’s significant win in Bangladesh’s 13th national parliamentary election. Banerjee, addressing the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) leader as Tarique Bhai, extended her congratulations to the people of Bangladesh ahead of Ramzan.
She personally called Tarique Rahman to congratulate him on his party’s success, as per government sources. The details of their conversation remain undisclosed. The gifts were received by BNP media cell member Atiqur Rahman Ruman and other senior officials.
Earlier, Banerjee expressed her felicitations to the party in a post on X, conveying her best wishes for the victory and the holy month of Ramzan. Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi also reached out to Rahman via Facebook, applauding him for leading the BNP to a resounding triumph.
Modi expressed his delight in speaking with Tarique Rahman and offered his support for the aspirations of the Bangladeshi people. He emphasized India’s commitment to fostering peace and prosperity between the two neighboring nations with shared historical and cultural ties.
The 13th Jatiya Sangsad election and referendum concluded recently, with the Election Commission of Bangladesh announcing official results for 297 out of 300 seats. The BNP and its allies secured 212 seats, while the Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami-led alliance won 77 seats. Islami Andolan Bangladesh and independent candidates also secured seats in the election.
