The Men’s Hockey India League (HIL) 2025–26 is gearing up for an intense battle as Kalinga Lancers, the top team, will clash with second-placed Ranchi Royals in Qualifier 1 at the Kalinga Hockey Stadium on January 23.

Kalinga Lancers have excelled in the league stage, securing a playoff spot as table-toppers with 16 points. On the other hand, Ranchi Royals, with 12 points, finished second, setting the stage for a highly anticipated knockout match.

The Lancers, based in Bhubaneswar, have displayed a dominant performance throughout the league, marked by consistent play and strategic prowess. With just one loss in seven matches, they have showcased a strong defense, conceding only eight goals.

Belgian drag-flick expert Alexander Hendrickx has been instrumental in the Lancers’ penalty-corner strategy, leading the team with eight goals, all from set-pieces. Their proficiency in penalty-corner conversions, at 28.1%, underscores their effectiveness in crucial moments.

Reflecting on the upcoming challenge, Lancers’ captain Arthur Van Doren emphasized the team’s focus on peaking at the right time. He highlighted the team’s defensive strength and set-piece prowess, expressing confidence in their abilities to perform well, especially with the home advantage.

Ranchi Royals, known for their aggressive attacking style, emerged as the top scorers in the league stage with 25 goals. Led by captain Tom Boon, who boasts 15 goals, the Royals have a formidable forward line that poses a significant threat to their opponents.

Boon’s goal-scoring prowess, comprising field goals, penalty-corner strikes, and goals from penalty strokes, highlights his versatility and impact in the attacking third. The Royals, with a mix of wins and defeats in the league phase, are gearing up for a challenging clash against the Lancers.

The upcoming Qualifier 1 match holds immense significance as the winner secures a direct spot in the Men’s HIL final on January 26. The losing team will get another opportunity in Qualifier 2 on January 25, facing the winner of the Eliminator match in a bid to reach the final.
