Microsoft has announced a groundbreaking $3 billion investment in India, marking its largest expansion in the country to date. Over the next two years, the tech giant will enhance its Azure cloud infrastructure and develop a robust AI ecosystem. This decision aligns with Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s vision of a “Viksit Bharat” (Developed India) by 2047, supporting the nation’s technological growth and global competitiveness.

The announcement was made by Microsoft Chairman and CEO Satya Nadella during a company AI event in Bangalore. Highlighting the investment’s significance, Nadella emphasized Microsoft’s commitment to meeting the surging demands of India’s dynamic AI and startup communities. Notably, the company plans to expand its cloud and AI data center operations, adding a fourth data region, expected to launch by 2026.

A vital aspect of this investment is Microsoft’s focus on talent development. As part of its ADVANTA(I)GE India initiative, Microsoft will train 10 million individuals over five years, equipping them with AI and digital skills. This step not only fosters innovation but also empowers India’s growing workforce in the digital era.

The announcement follows Nadella’s meeting with Prime Minister Modi, where they discussed collaborations to strengthen India’s digital infrastructure and innovation landscape. Modi welcomed Microsoft’s plans, highlighting the synergy between the company’s vision and India’s aspirations to become a global tech hub.

Microsoft’s longstanding commitment to India began in 1990 with the establishment of its first office. Over decades, its research and development centers in Bangalore, Hyderabad, and Noida have played pivotal roles in advancing India’s IT capabilities. Initiatives like Microsoft Learn and Project Sangam have further boosted skill development, supporting millions of students and professionals.

This $3 billion initiative reaffirms India’s position as a critical partner for Microsoft and signals a transformative step towards a more AI-powered, globally competitive economy.
