An office of the National Socialist Council of Nagalim (NSCN-IM) was burned down by an angry mob in Manipur’s Ukhrul district. This incident followed the reported killing of four NSCN-IM cadres by a rival group in Kamjong district. Tensions have been rising in both districts since news of the killings spread.
Ukhrul district, known for recurring unrest, shares borders with Nagaland and Myanmar, while Kamjong district has unfenced areas along the Myanmar border. The mob accused NSCN-IM members of involvement in the killings and demanded action against them, leading to the office being set on fire.
No casualties have been reported, and the NSCN-IM stated that no orders were given to retaliate against any group. An internal inquiry has been initiated by the organization to investigate the killings and ensuing violence.
Officials reported that the four cadres were shot dead by a rival group in Kamjong district. The attackers ambushed a vehicle carrying six cadres, killing four instantly while two managed to escape. A police team recovered the bodies the next day.
A delegation of Civil Society Organisations from Ukhrul, accompanied by the state Home Minister, met with the Chief Minister to discuss the situation in Ukhrul and Kamjong districts. The Chief Minister emphasized the importance of peace for development initiatives and called for collective efforts to restore stability in the region.
Incidents in Ukhrul and Kamjong districts since February have heightened tensions. On March 11, 21 civilians from the Tangkhul Naga community were detained by Kuki villagers and armed individuals in Ukhrul district. All detainees were released after negotiations the following day.
The NSCN-IM expressed sorrow over the killings and clarified that no directive was issued to attack any groups. An investigation is ongoing to determine the circumstances of the incident, with a warning that those responsible will face penalties according to Naga Army Rules and Regulations.
