A full-scale mock exercise simulating an earthquake and its impacts took place at Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel International Airport in Ahmedabad. The drill aimed to test emergency response systems and coordination during natural disasters. Organized by the National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) with the Airports Authority of India (AAI) and other agencies, the exercise assessed preparedness levels and coordinated actions in case of a seismic incident affecting critical infrastructure.
The simulation replicated an earthquake scenario with structural damage and disruptions to airport operations. The objective was to evaluate response mechanisms, test the Incident Response System (IRS), and assess resource mobilization under pressure. Various government departments, NDRF, SDRF, police, fire services, airport personnel, and key stakeholders participated to ensure comprehensive emergency management.
Officials highlighted the importance of the drill in strengthening inter-agency coordination and decision-making during disasters. Such exercises help identify operational gaps, enhance readiness, and safeguard lives and infrastructure. The exercise also aimed to improve coordination among agencies for effective response in real emergencies, emphasizing the need for swift and structured decision-making.
Authorities mentioned that the exercise findings would be analyzed to enhance emergency preparedness measures at the airport and relevant departments. The drill provided an opportunity to review Standard Operating Procedures and identify areas for improvement, reinforcing collective readiness for emergency situations.
